Department of Aerospace Engineering

Dr. Krishna D. Kumar is a Professor and the Director of Artificial Intelligence for Aerospace Systems (AIAS) Laboratory and Space Systems Dynamics and Control (SSDC) Laboratory in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada. His research interests include space systems design, miniature wireless systems, micro/nano-sensors and actuators (including sensor measurement, sensor fusion, state estimation, fault diagnosis, fault prognosis, and health monitoring), system dynamics and control, and intelligent control. He has been actively involved in this field for more than 25 years and received several grants totalling more than 4 million dollars in collaborations with federal and provincial government agencies, space organizations, aerospace and high-tech industries in Canada and abroad. His research has resulted in more than 273 publications (102 journal papers, 145 conference papers, seven books,  four patents, and 13 intellectual properties). The suggested innovative methods of spacecraft attitude control, spacecraft orbital maneuvering, spacecraft formation flying, and miniature wireless systems are some of the major achievements of his research work. He has  been widely recognized nationally and internationally with several awards that include Member, Astrodynamics Committee of the International Astronautical Federation (2021-2027), Member of the International Academy of Astronautics, France (the most recognized academy in the field of Astronautics) (2019), Sarwan Sahota Ryerson Distinguished Scholar Award (2015), Canada Research Chair (2005-2010; 2010-2015), Associate Fellow and Life Member of AIAA (2012), Ontario Early Researcher Award (2006-2011), NSERC Discovery Grant (2007-2012; 2012-2017; 2017-2022), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship (2001-2003), and Science and Technology Agency (STA) Fellowship (1998-2000). Recently, Prof. Kumar has been ranked among the top 100 scientists (73rd out of 45833) in the world and 1st in Canada in the field of Aerospace and Aeronautics by Stanford University https://lnkd.in/e_2qq-E, October 2020.  In addition, he is the co-editor of Acta Astronautica (a prestigious journal in the areas of spacecraft design, dynamics, and control) and Transactions of the Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences (JSASS) since 2014 and 2018, respectively.
