Biography

Dr. Chen is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Mechatronics Engineering, Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). He received his BSc and MSc in Materials Science and Engineering from Northeastern University, China; Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences; and his second doctorate (Dr.rer.nat.) in Chemistry from the University of Vienna, Austria. In addition, Dr. Chen obtained a Certificate in Higher Education Teaching at the University of Manitoba in 2000. Prior to joining Toronto Metropolitan University as an Assistant Professor (2001-2004) and then Associate Professor (2004-2008), Dr. Chen worked as a Post-doc Fellow (1993-1995) and Senior Research Scientist (1995-1997) at the University of Vienna; Research Associate at the University of Manitoba (1997-2000); and Materials and Process Engineer at Bristol Aerospace Ltd., Winnipeg, Manitoba (2000-2001).

Dr. Chen, an elected Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE), Member of European Academy of Sciences and Arts (MEASA), Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (FAAAS), Fellow of Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (FCIM), Fellow of Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (FCSME), Fellow of CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) Association (FCWBA), Fellow of Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM), and a recipient of Premier's Research Excellence Award, Canadian Metal Physics Award, G.H. Duggan Medal, MetSoc Award for Research Excellence, MetSoc Distinguished Materials Scientist Award, Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award, Ontario Professional Engineers Awards (OPEA) Engineering Medal - Research and Development, Ryerson inaugural Faculty SRC Award, FEAS Research Excellence Award, and Ryerson Research Chair, has authored 513 peer-reviewed journal (422) and conference (91) papers, plus 241 additional non-refereed conference papers/abstracts and research reports, including an invited "Advanced Engineering Materials Hall of Fame" article and two sets of "ABC" journals (Set one: Acta Materialia, Biomaterials, and Carbon; Set two: Materials Science and Engineering A, B, and C), Journal of Magnesium and Alloys, Journal of Materials Science and Technology, Additive Manufacturing, Journal of Power Sources, Materials and Design, International Journal of Plasticity, Corrosion Science, Journal of the European Ceramic Society, Scripta Materialia, etc. His research findings have received 22,000+ citations with an h-index of 74 from Google Scholar (or 18,600+ citations with an h-index of 67 from Scopus), including those cited in 735 review papers, 128 books or book chapters (where the number of the authored/non-edited books is 37), and 16 handbooks/sourcebooks or encyclopedia. His ground-breaking work on the nanocomposite materials leads to a well-known method that bears his name, and is twice identified by the Council of Canadian Academies (consisting of the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Canadian Academy of Health Sciences) to be one of the top 1% most highly cited papers in his field worldwide. He has also been featured in the World's Top 2% Scientists List in a study from Stanford University, California, USA.
