Short Biography

Liping Fang received his B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from Tianjin University, China, in1982 and M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1985 and 1989, respectively. Dr. Fang is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ryerson Polytechnic University, Toronto, Canada, and Director of Ryerson's School of Industrial Engineering. Dr. Fang is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Fang has actively carried out research and consulting activities in the areas of industrial engineering, systems engineering, engineering management, multiple participant-multiple objective decision making, risk analysis, decision analysis, reliability engineering, and decision support systems. His research has been supported by government agencies and private industry. Furthermore, he has published one book, one edited book, 19 refereed journal papers, one article in a yearbook, 30 refereed conference papers, and nine technical reports.

At Ryerson, he has taught many engineering courses, including Production Management, Work Study and Plant Layout, Design of Work Systems, Strategies of System Design, Facilities Planning, Operations Research, Decision Analysis, and Reliability Engineering.  Moreover, he has served on many committees at the departmental, faculty, and university levels, including committees for developing graduate programs, faculty promotion committees, chair search committee, department appointments committee, and curriculum committee.

Dr. Fang is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics. He has served as a member of program committees and organized special sessions for many international engineering conferences.

Dr. Fang is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). From May to August, 1998, Dr. Fang visited the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University, Japan, as a Center of Excellence (COE) Foreign Researcher.
